went through my old literature and found the sales brochure for the 

VR-8000.</DIV>

<DIV>Does anyone know how AMPEX decided on nomenclature for the machines?  

I get the VR part of it?  But why 1000, 1100 then 2000.  Then go back 

to 1200.  I know that the 5000, 6000 and 7000 series were 1 inch type A 

machines.  But then you have the odd balls like the 660 and the 1550 2 inch
