When the SMPTE standard for type ‘C’ was adopted, Ampex and Sony made small adjustments in their machines to conform. I have converted several VPR-1s into VPR-2s, but Sony always made you send the machine back and let them do it.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:#1F497D'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:#1F497D'>Unfortunately, many have called a whole variety of early 1” recorders type ‘A’ such as the IVC 800 series, Sony 300 series and Ampex 7000 series, but I like to only refer to the VPR-1 and Sony BVH-1000 (no A, because the A made it a C) as type A machines.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:#1F497D'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:#1F497D'>This is why there is no reference to a SMPTE type ‘A’ 1” specification as there never was one.
