2009, Boland released its first HD-series model of monitors. </p><p>Finally,
HD SDI monitors on 1920x1080 screens but with a <em>perfect</em> </p><p>NTSC
decoder and scalar inside. Not that
the previous generation </p><p>NTSC decoders and processors weren't good, but
now with full </p><p>implementation of all of the Faroudja image processing
elements </p><p>(patents), in digital, on one piece of silicon- No dot crawls,
no temporal </p><p>errors, near-perfect chroma rise-times (to the limit of the
bandwidth of </p><p>IQ decoding)*. All just in time for HD to really take off
and the signal </p><p>distributors (cable, satellite) to <strong><em>really
</em></strong>compress all the detail out of </p><p>SD (to squeeze as many
streams as possible into the bandwidth). </p><p>And to try to push people to
the higher (more espensive) HD tiers?<br></p><p><br></p><p>If you have a chance
to work with original NTSC (or PAL) recordings, </p><p>and want see what they
really looked like, borrow an HD- or HX-42 </p><p>(42") or larger series Boland
monitor sometime. Yves Faroudja used </p><p>to say, "NTSC is the best
system". In that time frame, he had good </p><p>reasons to say that. He laid
the foundations for our modern formats </p><p>in spades.<br></p>
