methods I remember were the DATE system which encoded QPSK audio into the video
and worked well on quad. This was implemented by PBS to send four channels
of audio. Of course, outboard encoders and decoders were

other was called ‘Sound in Sync’ and put a burst of digital data on the
horizontal sync tip. Some machines didn’t like it too well and a variation
was used where the data was put on the ‘front porch’ of the horizontal sync
interval. These were developed by the telephone company to get audio along
with the video for no lip sync error, but subcarrier transmission beat them out
for cost and simplicity.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
