Hence, I have no additional information. Perhaps this product was developed or marketed to look more appealing than the equivalent Ampex product (this RCA machine can be both a data recorder and a videotape recorder, resulting in that sales pitch angle to the government) but in reality probably never had that dual usage anywhere. Who knows? I will loosely compare this to the production of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Dynamics_F-111_Aardvark">F-111</a>, intended for purchase and use by both the Navy and the Air Force (later dropped by the Navy). Initial concept and development was partially based on supplying a single aircraft for usage by both branches of the service. </div><div><br></div><div><div>

I believe it predates the TR-5, but it was contemporaneous with the TR-22. I would doubt that the servo system would provide playback locked to an external source, but that is just a guess as the broadband recorders designed for instrumentation work had a completely different servo system. I further suspect that the "standard quad mode" of this machine was intended primarily for acquisition and possibly basic playback, but not for "studio" use. I suspect that the best it might have been able to do would have been a vertical lock, but quite possibly only a line lock. If anyone else has more specific info, please share!
