<DIV>It would be good to look at test signals at the output of each stage
of the signal chain to determine why the Ampex machine is soft. If the
demod outputs of both machines are the same, then an analysis of what is going
on with Amtec and Colortec should reveal where the softness is coming
from. If the bandwidth of the DTBC is better, then that could explain why
it looks sharper, but I'd want to be certain that there isn't something wrong in
the analog path of the other machine. Could also be that the response of
the DTBC is peaked beyond flat. Test signals will reveal all!</DIV>

<DIV><BR></DIV>The YouTube comparison was done before the 3M DOC was installed
in the Ampex so you can see black line dropouts.

<DIV>There is no visible aliasing in the Ampex/Merlin. It is also a 10 bit
TBC.</DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>The compression on YouTube makes it more difficult to see the slight
picture differences. The Merlin has a slightly sharper picture while the Ampex
is slightly softer. Lockup time is about the same, around two seconds.<BR>
