If the demod outputs of both machines are the same, then an analysis of what is going on with Amtec and Colortec should reveal where the softness is coming from. If the bandwidth of the DTBC is better, then that could explain why it looks sharper, but I'd want to be certain that there isn't something wrong in the analog path of the other machine. Could also be that the response of the DTBC is peaked beyond flat. If this is the original, you can see the difference. The aliasing will tell you which is the Merlin machine. The lack of a good drop out compensator will tell you which is the Ampex original.
