Today, after 92 years on the planet, he left us behind for a look a whatever adventure faces mankind at the end of our earthly presence.<div><br></div><div>Cronkite presided over what became the top ranked newscast of the 1960's and 70's, each broadcast recorded on Quad videotape for re-feed across the country and for time-zone delay on the West Coast.</div><div><br></div><div>He took over the CBS network's daily news broadcast from Douglas Edwards, the first anchorman recorded on videotape.</div><div><br></div><div>His legacy lives on through reels of 2" Quad archived at CBS and other repositories, documenting and commenting on some of America's most historic moments in the mid-20th Century: The assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and the results of Kennedy's pledge to put a man on the moon before the end of that century's sixth decade.<br><div><br class="webkit-block-placeholder"></div><div>During his 19 years at the helm of the CBS Evening News, Cronkite certainly had the chance to become the man most recorded on Quad.</div><div><br></div><div>One can speculate about what Cronkite's reaction was to entering his new form of existence. I think he might have echoed his summary of the first moonwalk just 40 years ago... "Whew!"
