<DIV>No, the 800 didn't die, although from all reports I've heard, perhaps it
should have! Here are links to some pics I have of a couple of them that I
saw a few years ago. Both of these include the built-in edit controller
with the second pic showing a "married" pair.</DIV>

<DIV>No intention of starting an Ampex vs RCA debate (I think they both have
their good and bad points) but as a primarily Ampex user, I must point out that
switching from hi-band to low-band on an Ampex quad only required one switch on
the older machines, or no switches at all on the newer machines with automatic
selection. It's been awhile since I was around RCA machines. What
were the two switches for?</DIV>

<DIV><BR></DIV> I missed the 600 series by that much. [indicate

<DIV>I toured KNBC Burbank where there were a lot of them, and saw a bunch
when I interviewed for Tech Alert out of Camden, NJ, but never got to operate
them, and of course the Broadcast Division was terminated shortly thereafter.
Good thing I didn't get that particular job! Seems to me a lot of
guys went straight over to SONAM from Camden. </DIV>
<DIV>While in Jersey, I also saw an early version of an RCA Type C helical, I
think it was going to be called the 800? Died in gestation.</DIV>

<DIV>Wow, another RCA guy! My quad career ran from 1985-1998, with
TR-600's. Our office now contracts the duplication out, but I still
have eight TR-600's in varying states of repair, numerous headwheel panels
and reasonably complete documentation. I loved the ability to go
from high to low-band playback by flipping two switches.</DIV>
